Braided Line For Striped Bass
My everyday setup is 15 braid with 30 leader or 20 braid with 40 leader.
Braided line for striped bass. A braided line constructed from eight carriers will be smoother rounder and quieter when passing through rod guides. Monofilament lines have possibility to be stretched and this is not so bad if it small enough. Blue fishing line is another great choice to go with in terms of the braided variety. I use this exact line for all of my bass fishing and inshore saltwater fishing and have found that it s more than enough to haul in the big boys.
I use spiderwire braid for about 50 percent of my bass fishing and carry it in three line sizes 10 50 and 65 pound test. As a result it will generally cast further. Braided line or braid is the relative newcomer making its appearance on the fishing scene in the late 80s. I used another braided line for a few years and while that was good it was not nearly as good as the spiderwire stealth and invisi braid lines i use now muller follows the migrations of striped bass along the northeast coast ranging from his home base in new jersey to hot spots from montauk to maine.
40 braid is fine but i would use a heavier leader most saltwater guys i know including myself would probably use 40 or 50. In heavy cover or low light conditions though that probably doesn t matter. Braid is great for fishing live baits and chunks for striped bass. These properties make the line ideal for all kinds of bass fishing except for techniques that use topwater lures.
And it is all surfcasting all the time. When fishing for both small and large mouth bass stick with a medium weight fishing like 8 12lb test line. It s also easier to tie secure knots in a copolymer line. Just like green blue braided line does blend into the water fairly well.
My recommended bass fishing lines braid and mono for bass fishing i highly recommend that you go with a good quality braided fishing line such as power pro in 15 lb test. If you use braided line for stripers keep in mind that these super lines have almost zero stretch. Today both line types are widely used in fresh and salt water and both have their advantages and disadvantages. I ve gone back and forth mono vs fluro leader and have yet to see the difference in number of strikes at present i cut my leaders form ande mono.
A perfect setup would be to run 12lb braided line with an 8lb mono leader line attached to it. You ll need to compensate by using softer action rods than you d normally use with mono. The line also has more stretch than braid or fluorocarbon making it better for situations in which you want the bass to hold on a little longer before striking.
